What are the Islamic Solidarity Games?

The Islamic Solidarity Games were initially created to establish a strong bond based on the Islamic identity of youths worldwide.

These games involve athletes who belong to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and are organized by the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation.

Furthermore, the main objectives of these games were to promote the values of non-discrimination based on the values of Islam and strengthen the spirit of sportive cooperation amongst the member states and with international sports bodies.

Another major motive of these games was to promote the Olympics in the Muslim World. The Islamic Solidarity Games were first held in Saudi Arabia in 2005, the third in Indonesia in 2013, the fourth in Baku in 2017, and the fifth in Konye in 2022.

Currently, the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation has 57 member countries. Additionally, non-Muslim members can also take part in the Islamic Solidarity Games now.

For many athletes, these games act as a training ground for bigger competitions like the Olympics. That’s because the qualifications for the Olympics take part a year after these games end.

Why is Saudi Arabia the Host?

Some of the reasons that make Saudi Arabia a great place to host these games is that it has prior experience in hosting major sports competitions like the World Youth Soccer Cup Championship, World Weightlifting Championships, Men's World Open Squash Championship, etc.

Apart from that, it also hosted the inaugural edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games. Furthermore, as per Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2023, that aims to make Saudi Arabia an economic force to be reckoned with.

It primarily seeks to do so by maximizing digital payments, enhancing revenue from non-oil sectors, boosting Foreign Direct Investments, attracting more tourists, and revamping the infrastructure.

For instance, you can expect projects like Jeddah Central, Saudi Downtown, etc. to come up soon. Additionally, Saudi Arabia is all set to host events like the Asia Cup in 2027, the FIFA World Cup in 2034, and so on.
